2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funding through the National Endowment for the Arts

Preserving Arts Jobs
The NEA has designed a plan to expedite distribution of critical funds for the national, regional, state, and local levels for projects that focus on the preservation of jobs in the arts. These funds are intended to directly impact a broad constituency, and reach the full geographic range represented by that constituency.

King County's 4Culture and the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs have both applied for and received one-time National Endowment for the Arts funding through the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) designated "to preserve jobs in the non-profit arts sector threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn." They will distribute these funds to eligible non-profit and local arts agencies in Seattle and King County via an application process. Read our joint press release.

Collaborative Application Process
Local government funding agencies are collaborating to minimize the effort required of applicants and to maximize the reach of limited funding. Organizations are encouraged to apply for the ARRA funding opportunities for which they are eligible, but may only receive one ARRA Arts Jobs grant. If a Seattle or King County arts organization has applied to WSAC and is not funded, their application will be automatically forwarded to the City of Seattle and 4Culture for consideration. Similarly, 4Culture will accept applications of qualifying Seattle organizations not funded by the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. Therefore if you are applying to WSAC or the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, you DO NOT also need to apply to 4Culture. See a side-by-side comparison of eligibility for the 4Culture and Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs opportunities.

Eligibility
King County based 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organizations and local arts agencies (LAAs) that are current recipients of 4Culture Arts Sustained Support funding are eligible to apply. Funds may be used to support staff salaries and/or artist fees for jobs or contracts which have been reduced, eliminated, or are currently threatened.

4Culture Award Amounts
Awards may range from $1,000 to $15,000.

Timeline
The NEA has prioritized a fast turnaround for ARRA funds. 4Culture's allocation process will take place in early September and applicants will be informed of the funding decisions by September 28, 2009. Funding will support any contract or salary expense incurred after October 1, 2009.
