New Landmark Challenge Grants Target Wider Range of Properties
May 23, 2008 – Preservation 4Culture has announced expansion in its support for owners of historic properties throughout King County with a new “Landmark Challenge Grants” program. “Landmark owners deserve all the help they can get,” says Jim Kelly, executive director. “After all, it’s private property owners and small organizations operating historic sites that really ‘do’ the great bulk of preservation work, while the rest of us benefit from the character these places give the community. 4Culture is pleased to be able to provide some direct assistance to these folks.”
Like most other 4Culture programs, Landmarks Challenge Grants will be open countywide. Any property officially designated as historic by any jurisdiction, including Seattle, and any property listed in the National Register of Historic Places in cities without a local preservation ordinance, such as Bellevue, will be considered eligible. In contrast, 4Culture’s successful Landmark Rehabilitation Program has been limited to a relatively small pool of landmarks in unincorporated King County, and in cities that have special inter-local agreements with the county.
Landmark Challenge Grants will fund the “bricks and mortar” repairs, rehabilitation, and restoration of both private and public historic places, including houses, barns, churches, vessels, cemeteries, public art, landscapes, and more. Project planning, architectural or engineering design, building permits and fees, and project management costs are also eligible expenses.
In order to showcase projects that visibly demonstrate the value of preservation to the community, projects must have a budget of at least $20,000, with a funding request to 4Culture of at least $10,000. And, to encourage owner investment in stewardship, a one-to-one cash match is required.
The application deadline for this first round of Landmark Challenge Grants is August 18, 2008. Downloadable application materials are available at Landmark Challenge Grants. Multiple drop-in workshops are scheduled in Seattle, Bothell, Auburn, and Issaquah in June and July.
