Gallery4Culture is pleased to present a new installation by Tory Franklin.

Within a fairy-tale interior of a Victorian trophy room, the viewer is placed in a world of overt surface ornament, subsumed by a veneer of horror vaccui. An illusionistic room becomes a stage set for the melodrama of the domestic turning in on itself, the animalist rearing up within normally static objects. Scale and pattern overwhelm the viewer, exploring how people utilize their homes and clothing as an extension of identity.

The room constricts and distorts, forcing the viewer through awkward transitions. Densely patterned screen-printed walls sport clusters of prints and drawings, bordered by faux wainscoting and molding, and provide a backdrop for the large drawings housed within the room. The viewer is left to create a narrative about the owner and their supposed persona through the creatures and fixtures that have been amassed, all the while realizing that this is just a skin of a story.

A reception will be held on August 3, 2006, the first Thursday of the month, during the Downtown Artwalk, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Façade is on display from August 3, 2006 - September 1, 2006.

Gallery4Culture is located within 4Culture offices at 101 Prefontaine Pl S, at the corner of Third and Prefontaine, in the Tashiro/Kaplan Building.
