Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

South Terminal Expansion Project [STEP]: 2000 to 2004
Central Terminal Expansion [CTE] Project: 2001 to 2005

The airport is often a visitor's first impression of a region's culture. STEP and CTE were the first in a series of large-scale terminal expansions initiated by the Port. Anticipating the increased number and size of capital projects planned, the Port hired 4Culture to manage an art program for STEP and CTE and to use this program as a model for integrating art into its other projects.

The expertise provided by 4Culture in the early planning stages enabled the Port to successfully institute an Art Oversight Committee that guides all public artwork at the airport, and to adopt criteria and budget guidelines for establishing percent-for-art contributions from various capital projects. 4Culture’s scope of work includes complete art plan development; facilitation of the artist selection process; contract negotiation and administration for selected artists and artworks; construction and contract document coordination for architecturally-integrated art projects; and supervision of artwork fabrication.

Artists/Artworks
The STEP art plan consists of three types of acquisitions: integrated building parts, invitational commissions and columns clad in glass mosaic. The CTE art plan is centered around one large-scale commission with potential to become a signature statement for the CTE public space and the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and an unforgettable icon for the Pacific Northwest region. In all, six major artworks will be integrated into the STEP and CTE projects.
