Brightwater

King County is nearly twice as large as the average county in the United States. With more than 1.7 million people, it is also the 12th most populous county in the nation. Snohomish County covers 2,090 square miles and is one of the fastest growing regions in Washington State. The Brightwater Water Treatment Plant Project will be a wastewater treatment system designed to handle this projected growth and protect the natural environment and public health of the region.

The Brightwater system will include a large treatment facility and an extensive conveyance system consisting of several portal locations, a pump station, conveyance lines and outfall to Puget Sound. The new Brightwater system will be completed by 2010.

The public art component of Brightwater will serve to create a high-quality facility which respects and reflects the community's values and character. The artists hired for the project will help the Brightwater Team ensure the maximum value for citizens of our region by creating an infrastructure that protects our natural environment and becomes a community asset.

Public artists T. Ellen Sollod, Buster Simpson and Jann Rosen-Queralt have been incorporating their ideas and perspectives into the conceptual design and mitigation planning for the project and have created an art plan that will serve as a framework for the development of public art. They have identified guiding principles for system-wide commissioned art works, which include but are not limited to: understanding the site and related communities; integration with the architecture, engineering, landscape architecture and educational programming of the site; demonstration of responsible stewardship in the making of artworks; poetic delivery and efficient production; collaborative in approach; and incorporation of elements of water, science, reclamation and culture.
