Sondra Simone Segundo was born and raised South Seattle and her grandparents are Haida from South East Alaska. They taught her to keep Haida culture alive through: music, hearing their almost extinct Alaskan dialect spoken fluently; continuing to eat their traditional foods; honoring their unique art forms; visiting tribal lands; and by embracing Northwest Coast Native family and community in Seattle.
Sondra hand paints traditional Haida designs on contemporary shoes and clothing. She makes traditional regalia (button blankets, hats woven from cedar bark, moccasins, dresses, tunics, aprons, jewelry, carvings and drums) to wear in performances for her dance group The Haida Heritage Foundation, in which she is a drum and dance leader. She also writes and illustrate children’s picture and art instruction books to educate younger audiences about Haida traditions.
