Announcing The Museum of History & Industry’s much anticipated Grand Opening in the beautifully restored Naval Reserve Armory at Lake Union Park! Trumpets please! (Can you tell we are excited?!) The opening festivities include a full week of activities and performances that will highlight different features of the new space, the inaugural exhibits, and the museum’s expanded youth and public programming.
“Moving to South Lake Union is truly a transformational experience for MOHAI,” said Leonard Garfield, MOHAI’s Executive Director, “We are simply thrilled to welcome the community into our new space and provide individuals with all kinds of new ways of engaging with and learning about our region’s history.”
The public Grand Opening kicks off on Saturday, December 29, 2012 with a ribbon-cutting at 10:00 am. The museum will then be open from 10am to 8pm both Saturday and Sunday with performances and activities throughout the day. The celebrations continue into the New Year with Family Day on Tuesday January 1, 2013, when MOHAI will showcase its new offerings for youth and families. The grand opening celebration culminates on Thursday, January, 3, 2013 with the new museum’s inaugural Free First Thursday. Visitors are encouraged to come to multiple events during the week to get a full sense of MOHAI’s new offerings and opportunities.

Although the MOHAI opening takes place at the end of December, be sure to mark your calendars for other events going on at South Lake Union Park throughout the month. 4Culture is a proud supporter of the many heritage organizations that call South Lake Union home their home port, including the Center for Wooden Boats, Northwest Seaport, Virginia V and many others with events happening all December long.
Some highlights? Always a favorite with the kiddos & FREE: Dec. 13th, 11am-12pm, Tugboat Story Time – Stories on the historic Arthur Foss, with time to explore the ship. Takes place at the Historic Ships Wharf, for more information visit www.cwb.org.
Dec. 23rd, 10am-12pm, Marlinspike (ropework) Skill Demos at SLU Boatshop – demos include how to tie turks head knots, line splicing and whipping, rigging demonstrations, hardware installation and more. Contact for more information.
