Depicting micro-organisms, various types of glass serve as a meditation on the science of water.
Two artworks by Ellen Sollod, who helped to develop to the Brightwater art plan, illuminate water treatment processes and celebrate the role of science in the facility using microbial forms made with glass.
Installed on the exterior of the building near the Northeast Plaza, Collection and Transformation creates a reflective environment that references the scientific and natural processes of cleaning wastewater. Two sections juxtapose laboratory glass with blown glass in the shape of stylized micro-organisms; together with lighting they create a jewel-like meditation on the scientific investigation, collection, and transformation of water.Continue Reading ›
The process of cleaning wastewater is a natural biological one, aided by beneficial micro-organisms. My blown glass forms reference cyliates and rotifers as well as imagined micro-organisms. The lab glass side of the piece is composed of both real and imagined laboratory glass. Much of it has become anachronistic as the function of the lab migrates to computer testing. – Ellen Sollod
It's All About the Water uses hand-painted and acid-etched glass to conjure the science taking place in Brightwater’s laboratory and treatment plant. The composition of the piece is inspired by images of typical wastewater micro-organisms as seen through a microscope, revealing the beauty of the laboratory and the unseen world within the water system. The imagery was drawn in part from scientific illustrations.
