Alexander Keyes

to: europa

Ever feel overwhelmed by the monotony and pressures of housework, family, and employment? Artist Alexander Keyes does. For relief, he has adopted a perspective of the world built on speculation and fantasy.

Alexander Keyes. Model Rocket #1, 2014. Found cardboard packaging. 3 x 3 x 10 feet.
  • March 3 - 31, 2016
  • Opening: Thursday, March 3

Keyes’ installation, to: europa, encompasses an array of escape mechanisms constructed from the minutiae of domesticity.

He has imagined starscapes emerging from spilt house paint, arranged cereal boxes into maps of the solar system, and dreamt up rocket ships from cardboard awaiting recycling. Reclaiming his sense of self through these hidden wonders, he can be lost in the desire for an impossible flight from everyday life.

About the Artist

Alexander Keyes grew up in the Pacific Northwest and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. After working in a marine diesel shop for a year, he moved to Eugene to pursue his MFA at the University of Oregon. Post-graduation in 2014, Keyes attended artist residencies in Portugal and Norway on a mission to put himself back together. Calling Seattle home, he was the Artist in Residence at the University of Texas at El Paso for the 2015-2016 school year, where he taught and developed a new body of work.
