Pie in the Sky

Pie in the Sky combines sugary iconography and audio-visual fanfare into an abstracted 3D environment.

Matthew Keff. Pie in the Sky, 2018. Video still.

Pie in the Sky considers the emotional relationships between people and things within the context of digital culture, questioning popular design tropes along the way. Anthropomorphic characters—hearts, stars, fruit, clouds, coins, beach balls, and more—fly and float, laugh and cry. Sound effects triggered at random create chance-melody. Items and effects are mixed up and abstracted in chaotic rhythm into a beat reminiscent of a carnival, traffic jam, or social media feed. Much of our digital culture uses gamified reward patterns to inspire user engagement; Pie in the Sky is both critical and celebratory of this behavior.
