In 2017, finding herself isolated in a male-dominated art form, Angel Alviar-Langley organized womxn poppers from around the world for an epic dance battle, the What's Poppin Ladiez?! Conference. Alongside devon de Leña, Shann Thomas co-directed and filmed Moonyeka, Miss Boogaloo Soo and Angyil Mcneal freelancing one morning in Gas Works Park.

In 2017, the movement based storyteller, Angel Alviar-Langley (aka Moonyeka), brought together a group of phenomenally talented womxn poppers from around the world for the What’s Poppin Ladiez?! Conference. Shann Thomas co-directed, captured and edited these teaser clips as promotional material for the award-winning, short documentary directed and produced by devon de Leña, Battlegrounds: The Hard Hits of Female Poppers. Battlegrounds: The Hard Hits of Female Poppers chronicles the creation and implementation of the What’s Poppin Ladiez?! Conference.


About the Artist

Angel Alviar-Langley (aka Moonyeka): is a queer mixed-Filipinx femme movement based storyteller who utilizes art creation, teaching, and organizing to realize a world that honors her communities’ stories in a way that is healing, celebratory, and generative. Moonyeka continues to facilitate LIL BROWN GIRLS CLUB (a movement based mentorship program for young g*rls of color), WERKSHOP (a womxn’s prefunk to 206 Zulu’s Soulful Mondays), and will be organizing WHAT’S POPPIN’ LADIEZ?! for it’s 3rd iteration this year.

devon de Leña: is a Seattle-based filmmaker, storyteller and social justice facilitator. As a mixed-raced womxn of color, devon values the importance of intersectionality and honoring complexity within our stories and movements.

Shann Thomas (they, them, theirs; aka @Shannimal_Planet): is queer and gender non-conforming filmmaker and photographer with a social justice lens. Shann strives to create work that recovers and reclaims the humanity of historically marginalized peoples. Most recently, they are working on Gender Gems, a large-scale photography project that celebrates and uplifts the lives of transgender and gender diverse elders in the Pacific Northwest.
