Birthtown

Paragliders

drifted through

the quilty green hillscape

each summer

by the dozen.

Over plumes

of cookout smoke

and choir hymns

they soared,

earnest as the sockeyes

returning upcreek,

sloping toward

a warm, clover-rich meadow

my sneakers

ached to meet.
