TRAILHEAD DIRECT

High on the volcano
we munched crackers
and nuts and gazed about
at the green meadow’s bowl—
a palm, cupped. Through the fingers
of that hand (holding us in safety)
a creek mumbled in its own language.
We sat among fat marmots,
below a sun that warmed everything.
