Doug Keyes creates a rich sense of place with multiple-exposure photographs that render complex experiences in a single image. "The layering of information over time creates a condensed portrait of places our senses have adapted to, places that we no longer 'see,' even though we experience them every day," he says.

International District and Rainier capture two urban Seattle neighborhoods. They belong to a larger series called Becoming Language, which is composed of multiple-exposure photographs taken in San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York City, the California Redwoods, Tacoma, Paris, and elsewhere. The works in the series document the subliminal information people gather as they move through a place.
