“Human beings in an urban setting have lost connection with the night sky,” Daniel Carrillo says. “In the middle of a large city, it is impossible to see anything but the brightest stars and the moon.” For these city dwellers—himself included—Carrillo set out to reveal a “treasure trove” of deep sky objects in Rosetta Nebula and Horsehead Nebula, both of which use specialized equipment to make the invisible visible. With technology and effort, Carrillo ventures into the Milky Way galaxy and visits the Orion constellation—journeys that first began when he bought a beat-up old telescope at a neighbor’s garage sale years ago.

Based in Seattle, Carrillo is photographer who focuses primarily on antique methods such as daguerreotypes, wet plate collodion ambrotypes, and large-format film, in addition to astrophotography and metalworking. His work has been exhibited throughout Western Washington and beyond.

Rosetta Nebula and Horsehead Nebula were added to the Portable Works Collection via the 2020 Curator’s Choice acquisition program.
