Heritage: Making History Happen
Heritage 4Culture advances the work of King County's heritage community in building the historical record, preserving and enhancing the character of the region, and sharing local heritage resources with residents, visitors, and future generations.
Heritage Cultural Facilities funds the purchase, design, construction, and remodeling of heritage facilities, and equipment acquisition. Every award from this annual program helps the heritage community enhance the quality of life in King County, and create an authentic sense of place for residents and visitors in this rapidly changing region.
Heritage Cultural Education encourages development of innovative classroom-based education projects in partnership with K-12 schools. Projects funded through this program must align with Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs), and be designed for distribution electronically via the Internet.
Heritage Special Projects funding supports innovative proposals to document and interpret the history of King County, and promote appreciation for its heritage and cultural traditions. The program has produced some of the region's most outstanding heritage publications, tour guides, videos, web sites, oral histories, events and exhibits.
Heritage Collections Care provides financial support to nonprofit organizations specifically for the conservation of historic collections within King County. The program promotes professional standards and practices in collections care; fosters strategic planning as a foundation for effective collections stewardship; and endorses collections care as a priority within institutional missions.
Heritage Sustained Support provides annual operating funds to heritage museums and organizations that collect, exhibit, interpret, preserve, or protect resources relating to the histories of people and places in King County. The program offers predictable levels of financial support, allowing organizations to plan for stable funding in a two-year period.
Historic places are among King County's most popular tourist attractions. Through our award-winning Destination Heritage multi-media guide series, 4Culture helps visitors and residents explore agricultural, industrial, and maritime history off the beaten track.
In partnership with King County TV, 4Culture produces 4CTV, an award-winning series of television programs highlighting arts and culture throughout the County. Programs air regularly on KCTV (Channel 22), municipal cable channels and can also be streamed directly from 4Culture's website. Our catalog includes feature-length documentaries as well as half-hour shows featuring discussions with arts and heritage leaders.
Employing minimal props and a liberal dose of audience imagination, Heritage 4Culture's professional theatrical partners turn true stories into engaging historical performances through this innovative outreach program. Performances based on historical nonfiction tour King County, or are researched and developed for specific historic sites. The program's goals are to enliven local heritage interpretation through theatre and to provide unconventional outlets for historical performance.

Since 2005, 4Culture has assisted in the revitalization of maritime heritage in Seattle and King County. We support preservation of our nationally significant fleet of historic ships, convene a monthly meeting of leaders from maritime heritage organizations, and are working to promote establishment of an exciting new National Maritime Heritage Area in western Washington.
