From January 31 – February 11, 2025, we will host the Rockland Residency: Black Cohort for Black artists living and working in the United States. Selected residents will be supported by Program Manager, Negarra A. Kudumu and On-Site facilitator, Aviona Rodriguez-Brown. Rockland will hire all of its support staff from within the Black community. This residency mission aims to provide the base layers of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid (food, shelter, love, belonging) to allow the artist to reach for the top of the pyramid (self-actualization). This cohort will gather the first day and co-create the culture for their 2 weeks together.

This residency will be held at Rockland Woods on the Kitsap peninsula, just a 90 minute ferry and drive west of Seattle. The property is 20 acres of 100-year old forest and a peaceful lake with private access. There is limited wifi. Spaces are private live/ work with the exception of some disciplines that require a separate studio. Some bathrooms are next door for half of the spaces, while others require a 1 minute walk outside to reach the nearest restroom. This is a residency in the woods.

We are committed to offering opportunities to dedicated artists with competitive work samples at any stage in their career. To intentionally avoid access bias, resumes are not a part of the application. Instead, we do a comprehensive review of the works submitted. The Selection Committee will be made of Black-identified professional artists.
